Making potatoes

Tanegashima is the place where Japan's first firearms were introduced, and it is also the place where Karaimo (sweet potato), a gift from the Ryukyu Dynasty about 300 years ago, was cultivated for the first time in Japan. Tanegashima's natural conditions are perfect for growing sweet potatoes: flat, close to the sea, soil rich in minerals, and a warm climate. All of Tanegashima Sake Brewery's raw material potatoes are grown organically and with reduced pesticides on our own 45ha farm spread across Nishinoomote City and Nakatane Town . Our focus on using high-quality raw potatoes leads to the production of delicious shochu.

Tanegashima is an island of flat sedimentary rock created by the rise of the ocean floor, sothe soil contains a lot of minerals, has a higher sugar content than sweet potatoes on the Kagoshima mainland, and is also starchy. It has soil that allows sweet potatoes to grow easily because of its high content.

Using high-quality purple sweet potatoes from our own farm as raw materials, the brewer Watanabe, who has 40 years of experience, puts his heart and soul into preparing this product using traditional methods.
